Brake Pad Selection Guide: Choosing the Right Compound for Your Driving Style

Brake pads are the most safety-critical wear item on your vehicle that most people choose based purely on price. The difference between the cheapest and a quality mid-range pad is typically €20–40 per axle. The difference in performance — particularly in emergency situations — can be substantial.

Brake Pad Compound Types

Organic (NAO) Pads

Non-asbestos organic pads use materials including rubber, glass, and resin. Quiet, gentle on rotors, minimal dust. Ideal for light city driving. They wear faster than other types and fade significantly under sustained heavy braking — not suitable for aggressive driving or mountainous terrain.

Semi-Metallic Pads

Containing 30–65% metal fibers, semi-metallic pads offer excellent heat dissipation and consistent performance across a wide temperature range. More noise and rotor wear than organic, but superior performance in most real-world conditions. The most versatile choice for European driving.

Ceramic Pads

Ceramic compounds produce minimal dust, low noise, and consistent performance as temperature increases. Gentler on rotors than semi-metallic. Main disadvantages: higher cost and reduced cold-temperature bite — not ideal in climates that regularly see temperatures below 5°C.

When to Replace Brake Pads

  • Squealing noise during normal braking (wear indicator contact)

  • Pad thickness below 3mm when inspected through wheel spokes
